Early this year, Makerere University received support from the African Development Bank to carry out three major building projects.
These include a new building at the college of Humanities and Social Sciences (Chuss) and another at the college of Business and Management Sciences (Cobams). SAM ORAGO took off time to see how the construction is going.
Work on the Chuss structure, expected to be named the Prof Ali Mazrui Chair of Politics and Governance building, has also reached the third floor.
According to Godfrey Mbayo, one of the site project managers, they have covered five months of the expected 18-month contract and all is going on smoothly. He added that they had not had any challenges with their over 100-member workforce.
Construction of the Cobams building is also at the third floor. One of the intern engineers at the site, Jonathan Okwalinga, says they are getting on well with their colleagues.
“We have encouraged many of our workers … to wear protective gear like the helmet to avoid being injured while at work,” he said.
Other construction sites in the university include the college of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity, where the university is improving the parking space there, as well as the college of Natural Sciences, where Chemistry laboratories are being refurbished. All sites should be ready for occupation in 2017.
